BBQ from the South

Few things are more gluttonous, and thus more American, than eating a pound of meat or a rack of ribs. BBQ and cheap beer fueled our odyssey to find the American dream like the 87 octane unleaded gasoline that powered our 2003 Yukon XL. We plotted our stops to coincide with lunch specials at BBQ restaurants throughout the south, with the hope of finding the perfect plate of meat. Our quest for marinated meats led us to the ghetto of Knoxville and the backwoods of South Carolina. At each stop, I photographed my orders.

Hickory Smoked Barbque, Knoxville Tennessee where a pulled pork sandwich was a steep $2.75.

I prefer dry rub BBQ to messy wet rubs like this plate of BBQ.

Luella's BBQ, Ashville North Carolina. Some of the best ribs I have ever had.

10 minutes later.

JB's Smokeshack, John's Island South Carolina, located twenty minutes outside of Charleston. This place was unbelievable. Hands down the best BBQ we ate on the trip.

This is what buffet looked like. All you could eat for 8 dollars. Needless to say I went back twice.

Maryland Fried Chicken, Little River South Carolina.

I cant wait to have more.

The voyagers in a food-induced coma.

Tucker
I hate to say it, but we read about it in a New York times article. It was amazing. I didnt try the fried catfish though. I just checked the website and on Fridays the lunch buffet includes cat fish.

I hit JB's a few years ago after an epic surf session with a local buddy the last time I was in Charleston. He had told me several days earlier about this "not-so-secret, secret little bbq joint" he was going to take me to that was going to "blow my mind." It was blown indeed. I was in so much pain when we left.

Sometimes pain is bliss...and good bbq can get you pretty close to heaven.

Memphis dry ribs at Redbones are my go-to. (In Somerville, a walk from our place... Only narragansett or SChlitz in the big can though...) Doing damage as below. http://tiny.cc/ze4Rb

Don't mean to offend anyone, but BBQ from anywhere BUT Memphis is bullshit. They don't call them Memphis dry ribs for nothing.

Foster Huntington said...

Memphis88,
your right. we were seriously thinking about making the trek to Memphis to eat bbq and then turn around. I would have been a great addition to the trip.

If you ever return to NC add Lexington #1 (Monk's) to the list in Lexington, of course. And a bit more to the east, either Parker's or Bill's in Wilson.

I'm on the other coast now and slow smoked bbq is the only food I miss.

Memphis, harsh. In my defense, St. Louis-style is on virtually every reputable BBQ menu in the world. Eat it. No, really, eat it.

Nicholas,
Where on the west coast are you located? there is a great bbq place in portland called podnah's pit. the ny times gave it a nice write up.

Blue Smoke in NYC. I got a tour behind the scenes too and saw their smokers, a marvel of engineering to meet code. Awesome grub.

If you ever make it back down this way, there are two other bar-b-q joints you need to add to your list.

1. Smokin' Stokes out of Greenville, South Carolina. Their sauce is made using Cheerwine and it is really good.

2. Melear's out of Fayetteville, GA (near Atlanta). The best brunswick stew there is. I think that brunswick stew is just a Georgia thing, because I haven't had it in any other states.

Also, I've never been to Luella's but I am going to have to make it there. Its just an hour away and I see their ads on tv all the time.
