Carey and His 24-Year-Old Beard

When most people think of southern Vermont, they think of skiing, overpriced maple syrup and picturesque dairy farms, not men like Carey. I spotted Carey shoveling snow off of his trailer in North Windham, Vermont on Saturday, the 21st. His openness and friendliness was that of someone often overlooked and neglected by passers-by.

Carey hasn't cut his beard since "sometime in '85." I was born in '88.

Carrey is New England.

His use of pattern mixing, particularly in the head-wear, is stunning. It's almost as if he didn't mean to do it. Love the 'Side Of The Road' series.

That's it. I'm convinced. I'm moving to a cold climate. Another excellent post.

Foster,

I've gotta say I love the blog and you take some great pics. This guy is definitely backwoods New England. But, as someone who spent 23 of my 24.5yrs of life so far living in New England (York, ME)I would disagree that "Carey is New England", there's far too much diversity to hook him up with that title. It runs the gammit (probably spelled wrong) from the guy from Southie, the Preps at Exeter, to Carey in VT and so much in between. That variance is part of what makes New England great. He certainly shows the rougher side of New England that most people miss. Keep up the great work!

Jon,
Thanks for the engaging comment. By saying that Carey is new england i was trying to put forth a voice that is rarely represented. I agree new england is preppy, its old, its cape cod, its maine sea ports, but its also people like carey.

Foster,

In that aspect I completely agree with you, that he does represent a rarely represented demographic of NE. I really like the barn post. What makes New England different is a question I field a lot too. I'm a wicked restless transplant myself as I live south of the Mason Dixon line in TN while my wife goes to grad school. In an ironic twist I tell people here that New England is more socially progressive, because in comparison to here you'd think Maine was one big vegetarian nudist colony.

Jon,
Is your wife going to Vandy? I can only imagine how much of a culture shock that would be. I guess any thing is conservative and stuffy compared to Portland Oregon, my hometown. where in new england do you hail from?

Foster,

I wish my wife was going to Vandy, beautiful school and Nashville is actually pretty cool. She goes to the University of TN which is in Knoxville. It has indeed been a culture shock and continues to be. A good friend of mine lived in Portland for a few years after graduating from Willamette, never made it out to see him, but it sounded pretty liberal. I grew up and lived in York, ME my whole life and went to the University of New Hampshire. Where are you in Maine?

damn...I never thought I'd come across someone that spells their name the same as I.

I've only seen it on a tomb stone in a grave yard on the top of queen anne in seattle.

This guy is rad!
